On Saturday 11th October 2025, the Chelsea Heritage Partnership hosted another in our series of successful pre-match heritage events, this time highlighting the history of the, often spicy, encounters with our red rivals, going back as far as our first ever home game at Stamford Bridge for the newly established Chelsea FC.

On 4th September 1905, Chelsea hosted Liverpool in a friendly game, the first Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge, running out eventual 4-0 winners. Official Chelsea FC historian and Chelsea Heritage Partner Rick Glanvill, explains how that game came about in this informative presentation.

Accompanying the presentation, another of our knowledgeable Partners, Paul Carter of Stamford-Bridge.com, provided interesting snippets of newspaper cuttings of the time with match reports and commentary on the game. Those cuttings can be downloaded below, along with a copy of the match day program.
Along with Rick's presentation, we also shared footage of past encounters with our opponents along with show reels of our participating players as a build up for the game ahead.
As anticipated, the event was very well attended and it was pleasing to welcome Chelsea supporters young and old – fantastic to see so many of the next generation of fans taking a keen interest in our incredible history.
The highlight of our more recent history, of course, was the Champions League trophy – a must have photo opportunity for all our visitors. The trophy was accompanied by some well known shirts, once worn by Chelsea legends appearing later in the charity game, along with some boots our fans will also recognise. The experience was enhanced by having a member of the Museum and Stadium Tours team on hand to chat with our supporters.

Diego Costa was famously pictured with a ripped shirt in a match between Chelsea and Liverpool at Anfield on November 8, 2014, where he tussled with defender Martin Škrtel, resulting in his shirt being torn. The incident occurred in the first half, and Costa later scored the game-winning goal in Chelsea's 2-1 victory.

The 3-2 win in extra time gave Jose Mourinho his first silverware at Chelsea, in an incident packed game where Jose was sent off for gesturing to the opposing fans.
Our grateful thanks to all who helped put this event together, from members of the Chelsea Heritage Partnership and Chelsea Supporters Trust, the Supporter Liaison Team at Chelsea FC to the ever helpful Chelsea Museum staff. Last, but not least, all the staff looking after us in the Tea Bar.
Look out for our next event on 8th November 2025, 6pm in the Tea Bar, prior to our Premier League game v Wolves.
